Abstract

The neutron and proton distributions that define the dimension, i.e., radii of nuclei are fundamental properties determining the localization of nucleons and hence the wavefunction. Related to the radii by uncertainly principle is the momentum distribution from internal motion of the nucleons. Together the radii and momentum distribution can describe the ground state configuration of nuclei. The radii and momentum distribution of unstable nuclei are unveiling exotic new forms of nuclei, nuclear halo, and nuclear skin that are transforming the traditional fundamental concepts. This chapter discusses the new findings for unstable nuclei and the experimental techniques and briefly outlines some of the theoretical models employed to extract the physical quantities from the measured cross sections. Section “Radii and Density Distribution” discusses the radii and density distributions. Section “Nucleon Removal Momentum Distribution” discusses the momentum distribution from nucleon removal.
