Illustrated Flora of Bambusoideae in China

Abstract

Taxonomists of Poaceae now generally reach a consensus that Bambusoideae includes two categories on the basis of habit, i.e., the woody bamboos and the herbaceous bamboos. The woody bamboos are usually called “bamboos,” while the herbaceous bamboos are usually named “herbaceous bambusoides grasses” or simply “herbaceous bambusoides” (zhe in Chinese). Zhe is a phonetic combination of Chinese words for bamboo (zhu) and grass (he). Herbaceous bamboos have unbranched stems and only vegetative leaves, but no culm leaves, just like grasses. On the other hand, herbaceous bamboos have so many similarities with woody bamboos, such as the morphology of leaf epidermal cells and silica cells, the type of micro hair cells, and guard cells on both sides of the stoma and embryo. Herbaceous bamboos have semelauctant inflorescence.
