Abstract

This chapter provides an understanding of historical trends in medical education. It begins with a discussion on recent rapid expansion of medical schools internationally. Trends in medical education are influenced by technology, specialties in clinical practice and changes in health care delivery. However, many medical schools have not addressed unmet needs for more doctors in disadvantaged communities. A critical theoretical perspective and transformative learning is needed to challenge the status quo. Socially accountable medical education has emerged as a trend that empowers communities to influence medical schools. Other related trends that take account of different contexts, can potentially transform future medical schools include: the changing demographics of students and faculty; a focus on student well-being, longitudinal integrated clerkships and experiential learning though clinical simulation, interprofessional education and climate change.
