Cognitive Linguistics in China

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of cognitive linguistics as a field of research in China. It first provides a brief introduction of its history, followed by an analysis of the characteristic features of the Chinese language and illustrations of Chinese as an ideal language to be explored from the perspective of cognition. It then discusses the most important findings by Chinese linguists, including (un)boundedness, parts of speech, metaphor and metonymy, blending and haplology, construction grammar and particles, and so on. It concludes that a distinctive paradigm has been formed in terms of a combination of cognition, pragmatics, and functionalism in the cognitive linguistic study in China.

Associative phrase (Associative phrase denotes a type of modification where two noun phrases (NPs) are linked by the particle -de. The first noun phrase together with the particle -de is the associative phrase. The name associative phrase indicates that two noun phrases are “associated” or “connected” in some way; the precise meaning of the association or connection is determined entirely by the meanings of the two noun phrases involved (Li and Thompson 1981: 113).)
