Abstract

Maldivian Higher Education has grown rapidly in the last two decades. During this period, several changes has occurred in the Maldivian Higher Education System. This article looks at current Maldivian Higher Education System and its policies and practices, and argues that the system is moving towards massification, by enhancing access to higher education opportunities for all eligible students. Five main perspectives are discussed in this article: size of the Maldivian higher education, higher education financing, institutional streamlining, governance, and quality assurance. The article describes the higher education financing model in the Maldives, and the differences in the governance of the public and private higher education institutions. The established quality assurance mechanism, and the increasing prominence of it is explored, and finally the chapter lists some of the contemporary issues in the Maldivian higher education system.
