The Devils Tower is located at a ranch in northwestern Wyoming, United States. It is a basalt volcanic neck that was formed approximately 50 million years ago. When the basaltic lava cooled, columnar joints developed due to contraction, forming closely arrayed large columns with pentagonal and hexagonal shapes. When the surrounding rock was eroded by weathering, the volcanic neck would be exposed, forming a large stone ‘tower’ composed of stone columns with a base diameter up to 300 m, a height of 265 m above the ground, and a top diameter of 85 m. This tower is visible from a distance of 160 km. The locals call it ‘Devils Tower’, and it has become a world-famous wonder that receives more than 600,000 visitors every year (Fig. 11).
