Clastic rock mesas are also known as ‘table-like mountains’. They have flat tops and are surrounded by steep cliffs. They form in areas of Mesozoic red sandstone, siltstone, shale and sandy conglomerate. The rock strata are relatively flat with extensive fractures in the structure. A mesa forms when the top (cover) has a layer of hard rock. In some Mesozoic basins in the middle and southern Sichuan Basin in China, mesa landforms with red sandstone tops are well developed.
