This park is located along the border between Guantanamo and Guort provinces in eastern Cuba, and it covers a core protection area of 693 km2. The complex geological landscape features of the park contain the best examples of ecosystem diversity and species diversity in the Caribbean and have made Cuba one of the richest tropical islands on Earth. Because many of the underlying rocks contain toxins, only plants that have developed anti-toxic mechanisms have survived. The unique evolution of life in this region has led to the development of numerous new species, making the park one of the most important local plant protection sites in the Western Hemisphere.
