Synonym: Rain-flower pebble
Yuhua stones, also known as five-colour stones, are agate pebbles found in Yuhuatai in Nanjing. This type of stone has long been considered the ‘Queen of Stones’. This term originally referred to agate with rain and flower patterns, but all pebbles found in the gravel layers of the Yuhuatai Formation are now collectively called Yuhua stones. The main component of these stones is silica with small amounts of magnesium, manganese and copper. Yuhua stones include various kinds of agate and chalcedony as well as flint, siliceous rocks, jasper, quartz, conglomerate, silicified limestone, gravels of opal, rock crystals and structure stones. Yuhua stones have a long cultural history; along with beads, tubes, rings and semi-circular decorations, they have been unearthed from the 5,000-year-old Nanjing Yinyang cultural site (Fig. 12).
