This sanctuary is located in the central part of the peninsula of Baja California and the northwestern corner of Baja California Sur, and it covers a core protected area of 3,709 km2. The sanctuary contains several exceptionally interesting ecosystems. The coastal lagoons of Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio are important reproduction and wintering sites for grey whales, harbour seals, California sea lions, northern elephant seals and blue whales. The lagoons are also home to four species of the endangered marine turtle.
