These reserves are located in the high desert of northern Niger and have a total area of 77,360 km2. Although the protected sanctuary makes up only 1/6 of the total natural area, it is the largest protected area in Africa. It includes the volcanic rock mass of the Aïr and a small Sahelian area. Its climate and flora and fauna are isolated because Ténéré is situated in the Saharan desert. The reserves boast an outstanding variety of landscapes, plant species and wild animals.
