This geopark is located in the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece, and it covers an area of 12,500 km2. It became a global geopark in 2010. It has a well-preserved generally mountain landscape, including the most impressive feature in western Greece, the Vikos-Aoos Gorge. The geopark has exceptionally rich geological diversity as well as an enormous natural habitat extending from lowland landscapes to alpine landscapes. The management responsible for running the geopark pays attention to the development of a sustainable tourism industry by incorporating local villagers.
