A stratum is a rock layer with a common composition or characteristics. Generally, the term is associated with sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks that can be distinguished from adjacent strata and rocks by clear interfaces or interpreted interfaces upon study. Strata with the same characteristics tend to form specific landforms; therefore, stratigraphy is an important basis for studying the landscape in connection with rock landforms.
