Synonym: Shoushan stone
Shoushan stone is an aqueous aluminium silicate that is mainly composed of pyrophyllite and dickite. It gets its name from Shoushan Village in the northern suburbs of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, where it is mainly mined. It has a very compact blocky structure with unique stripes (radish pattern). The pure stones are whitish, while those with impurities are red, purple, orange, brownish yellow or whitish yellow. Shoushan stone has a weak waxy lustre, which creates a creamy impression. It is opaque to slightly transparent, and some specimens look transparent. It is a soft rock with a density of 2.5–2.7 g/cm3. Shoushan stone is generally harder than Qinghtian stone and is suitable for carving. There are three main types, including Tian Keng (arable field pit) stone, Shui Keng (water pit) stone and Shan Keng (mountain pit) stone, and 65 varieties.
