Shale is an argillaceous rock with specific textures and fissures that is formed by compaction, dehydration, and recrystallization of clayey materials. Shale is mainly composed of illite as well as other clay minerals, clastic minerals and authigenic minerals. Common types are black shale, carbonaceous shale, oil shale, siliceous shale, ferruginous shale and calcareous shale. Shale is impervious, so it often serves as an aquifuge.
