This is a landscape comprising terraces higher than the flood level along the river banks. These terraces are formed by the deposition and erosion of the river. Based on the mode of formation and the composition and structure of the terrace, these landforms can be divided into eroded terraces, depositional terraces, base terraces, buried terraces, upper stacked terraces and internal stacked terraces. River terraces are an indicator of the river’s development history. The longitudinal variation in height of terraces of similar ages can also be used to analyse the pattern of tectonic activity.
