The Qingling Axis is a secondary tectonic structural unit along the southern margin of the North China Platform. The name was coined by Huang Jiqing in 1945. It is oriented EW and extends east along the main ridge of the Qinling Mountains via the Nanyang Basin to the Huaiyang Shield. This area is mainly composed of ancient metamorphic rocks. Recent studies reveal that the main body of these metamorphic rocks, including the Qinling Group, Kuanping Group, Taowan Group and Liuling Group, belong to the Mesoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic or Palaeozoic Erathems. The so-called ‘Qingling Axis’ is the base of the Qingling orogenic belt, which is characterised as an overthrust system. Due to the recent extensive uplift of the Qinling Mountains and the presence of hard rocks, abundant distinctive landforms have formed, which are a good foundation for geopark development.
