Pingjiang Shiniuzhai Geopark, Hunan

This geopark is located in Pingjiang County, Yueyang City, Hunan Province. It has an area of 78 km², and the main geological heritage area covers 21 km². It became a national geopark in 2011. The geopark is dominated by Danxia landforms with both granite landforms and water body landscapes. The geological remains are typical, rare, natural, graceful, and systematically integrated. The formation of the Danxia landforms in the park represents the evolution of the Earth since the Cretaceous in northeastern Hunan and even across southeastern China. Six geosites satisfy the requirements of national geoparks. The Danxia landform developed on granitic sandstone under special structural conditions. It is unique among the family of Danxia landforms. The 3.5-km-long cliff and the hundreds of miles of granitic sandstone and conglomerate provide stunning scenery (it has been called white Danxia due to the leaching of the originally red Danxia) and extend over thousands of metres of the rocks.
