This type of volcanic eruption is named after the Mount Pelee on Martinique Island in the Lesser Antilles. A Pelean-type eruption is a violent eruption of viscous magma, usually rhyolitic, andesitic or trachytic. The erupted materials include hot volcaniclastic flows accompanied by the formation of volcanic dome. Lateral eruptions may occur along sides of the volcanic dome, forming pyroclastic flows.
