The Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy National Reserve Department is in charge of all affairs related to national parks. Currently, there are 26 national parks in Costa Rica. La Amistad International Peace Park (previously known as La Amistad International Park) and Cocos Island National Park were included in the World Heritage List by the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
