Mount Athos is located on the Athos Peninsula in northeastern Greece. It covers an area of 330.42 km2. The sacred mountain has been the spiritual centre of the Orthodox Church since 1054 and has enjoyed religious autonomy since the Byzantine Empire. Women and children are forbidden from the site, and it is also an important art region. The planning and design of its convent (which currently includes approximately 20 monasteries with 1,400 monks) has had an impact on religious communities as far away as Russia. The painting style has also affected the history of Orthodox art throughout the world.
