This geopark is located on the west coast of the province of Buzko in Basque Country, northern Spain. It has an area of 89 km2 and became a global geopark in 2010. This geopark contains impressive deformed geological structures, such as folds and faults of different types and sizes. The two geologic fields of coastal flysch (turbidites) and the limestone hills in the early Cretaceous karst landscape are prominent. The geological and geomorphological variations along the 23-km-long coastline are abrupt. The coast consists of a steep cliff landscape and one of Europe’s most extensive sea erosion platforms. The coast records a complete history of more than 600,000 years of uninterrupted geological development, and the stratigraphy records the corresponding marine environment. In addition, there are important fossil sites and other outstanding natural and cultural assets, such as the rich architecture and cultural heritage of the seaside and rural environment.
