These islands are located in the Gulf of California in northwestern Mexico. The heritage site extends across Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit. The area includes 244 islands and extensive portions of the coast. The Sea of Cortez and its islands are recognised as natural laboratories for research on species formation. Almost all types of marine physical and biological processes on Earth can be found in the region, as well as 695 vascular plant species and 891 species of marine fish, of which 90 are endemic fish species. The area breeds 39% of the world’s marine mammals and 1/3 of the world’s mussel species.
