Hypersthenite

Hypersthenite contains 30–50% Fe2Si2O6, and the remainder is Mg2Si2O6. It belongs to the clinopyroxene family, crystallizes in an orthorhombic crystal system and occasionally forms columnar crystals. It often appears in bladed or platy aggregates and is brownish green or black with brownish grey streaks. Its diaphaneity is translucent to opaque, and it has a submetallic lustre, a specific gravity of 3.4–3.8, a Mohs hardness of 5–6 and serrated fractures. It forms in ultramafic and mafic rocks.
