Pedagogical Models of Play for Innovative Teaching

Introduction

Traditional models of play typically describe stages of play and explain each stage in terms of the child’s growth and development. Models of play have been a vital tool in understanding child development and learning, connecting what is observed to theoretical understandings of development and learning. They aid researchers in planning studies and educators in planning effective environments for learning. Clear connections to theories help educate parents and professionals about the importance of play. There is a great deal of research that indicates how vital play is in these early years, and that supports the time-honored idea that play is the work of childhood. Yet, despite all that has been learned about play, in recent years there has been a decline in play opportunities for children.
