The epistemological field of Comparative Education, determined by the nature, characteristics, boundaries, and properties of comparison, is complex and involves understanding it in the constant reconfiguration of the scientific and methodological mosaics of social sciences, particularly education. The work Esquisse et vues préliminaires d’un ouvrage sur l’éducation comparée, by Marc-Antoine Jullien, published in Paris in 1817, is considered a consensual reference which provides the starting point for the historic construction of the scientific framework of Comparative Education. Still, as a field of knowledge, it is crucial to analyze it from four axes which enable us to understand its constitution: (i) the ideology of progress; (ii) a concept of science; (iii) the idea of nation-state; and (iv) the definition of a comparative method (Nóvoa 1998).
