Introduction

Importance of the Subject for Engineering

For the designer of a structure deployed in ice-covered waters, the extreme ice load associated with a return period (typically 100 years) is not the only problem to solve. Observation and measurement on full-scale structures have revealed that ice load is usually time-varying, and in some cases severe structure vibration may arise due to ice loading. The same as other dynamic excitations (e.g., by wave, wind, earthquake), dynamic ice load will lead to different problems than that of extreme ice load, which are illustrated in Fig. 1.
