Performance Indicators in Higher Education
Performance indicators in higher education give a measure of how well higher education is doing in relation to its functions of education, research, and third mission.
In a social system, such as higher education, there is often no absolute definition of performance, and instead it is performance relative to observed possible performance that is of interest. It is difficult to know, if not impossible, where the maximum possible performance in an indicator is. As such, monitoring performance using indicators tends to be about trends in time (whether an indicator shows an increasing or decreasing performance in one dimension), or how the unit of analysis compares relatively to the observed performance of comparable units. The unit of analysis can be an individual (student or member of staff), a higher education institution or one of its units, or a whole higher education system.
