Definition

Glycerophosphoglycerol consists of two glycerol molecules, which are linked by ester bonds with a phosphate group and two fatty acids (Fig. 1). At neutral pH values, the phosphate group is deprotonated, which results in a negatively charged acidic phospholipid. Hydrolysis of a fatty acid leads to monoacylglycerophosphoglycerol with only one fatty acid located at the sn-1 position (Christie 2014; Leray 2013).
