Introduction

Jean Barbeyrac (1674–1744) was an influential figure in the Republic of Letters of early modern era. He is best known for his French translations of Samuel Pufendorf’s and Hugo Grotius’s natural law treatises. Barbeyrac continued to emend and enrich his translations and to publish new ones with more comments and erudite footnotes throughout his career, which lasted until his death in 1744. Barbeyrac was deeply troubled by the experiences of the Huguenot diaspora and he sought to understand the origins and the solution to the religious intolerance; and this led him to study and promote natural law theory which then became his life work as a translator, an academic, and a journalist.
