Śatānanda was a widely respected eleventh-century astronomer from the city of Purusottama (now Puri) in Odisha. The son of a certain Śaṅkara, he was the author of the Bhāsvatī, an influential treatise on the making of almanacs. This work was completed in the year 1099–1100 CE (Śaka 1021).
By the year 1099–1100, Anantavarman Coḍagaṅga, the founder of the Western Gaṅga state, had established sway over large parts of coastal Odisha. He ruled for 70 long years from 1077 to 1147 CE. He was instrumental in redefining the political and religious life of the region in many ways. Today, his fame rests largely on the fact that he rebuilt the temple of Puruṣottama (Jagannātha, since the fourteenth century) in the town of Puri. We owe much of the political and religious legacy the region inherited in the coming centuries to this great pioneer.
