Overview
As an alternative to more standard procedures often used in solving plate flexure problems, an “influence function” approach known as Maysel’s method may be employed. According to this method, the thermally-induced transverse deflection of a point on the plate middle surface can be calculated providing an expression is known for the transverse displacement produced by a unit concentrated transverse force applied to a plate of identical shape and support conditions. Applications of Maysel’s method are presented here for simply supported rectangular plates, and for clamped and simply supported circular plates. In the case of axisymmetric plate problems, Maysel’s method may be applied by considering a line load distributed over a circular path rather than a concentrated force. References are cited to applications of the influence function approach for various other plate problems.
