Definition

TEI occurs in a sliding system such as automotive disk brake or clutch that involves two or more sliding bodies in frictional contact. If the sliding speed is sufficiently high, the thermal-mechanical feedback process is unstable, leading eventually to the localization of the load in a small region of the nominal contact area of the sliding surfaces. To predict the growth rate of temperature/pressure at a given sliding speed or the critical value of the speed above which the system becomes unstable, a perturbation method is applied, in which the temperature, displacement, or pressure is assumed to grow exponentially in time. The finite element formulation can then be implemented to the governing differential equations of thermoelasticity and heat transfer to construct an eigenvalue equation in the matrix form, from which the exponential growth rates of the variables are...
