Definition
The Duke Anxiety-Depression Scale (DUKE-AD) is a seven-item self-report questionnaire for detecting the risk of major anxiety and/or depression at a given point in time. It can be completed by the respondent or by an interviewer.
Description
The Duke Anxiety-Depression Scale (DUKE-AD) (Fig. 1) was developed by Parkerson, Broadhead, and Tse (1990, 1991) as a 7-question subscale of the 17-question Duke Health Profile (DUKE) to measure the risk of both major anxiety and major depression within a 1-week time frame. It can be administered by the respondent or by an interviewer. There are two questions for psychological symptoms (nervousness, depressed feelings), two for self-esteem (give up too easily, comfortable around people), two for somatic symptoms (sleeping, fatigue), and one for cognition (difficulty concentrating).
