Definition
Vision 2020 is a set of principles for a strong, healthy, sustainable city which balances environmental, economic, health, and social implications of decisions over the long term. The document was prepared in 1992 by a collaborative group of citizens and local government in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The initiative was instigated by shifts in the definition of economic success in this city, known for its steel and related industries, and perceptions of environmental degradation stemming from this economic activity. Vision 2020 has been updated at 5- and 10-year intervals, has been accompanied by a system of indicators designed and implemented at arm’s length from the city government, and has contributed to subsequent strategic and growth management planning in Hamilton, although the power of this vision compared to that of other local visions for development is questionable.
