Definition

Urologic diseases refer to illnesses of the male and female urinary tract, encompassing kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra, as well as the male reproductive organs, including testes, penis, and prostate. Urologic diseases can be congenital or acquired and cancerous or benign, and they may predominantly concern men or women or both (Litwin & Saigal, 2007). The surgical specialty concerned with the medical and surgical treatment of most urogenital diseases is urology. Although diseases of the kidneys such as end-stage renal disease are generally classified in one overarching category with urologic diseases, their medical treatment falls within the domain of another specialty that is nephrology.
