Bivariate analysis refers to the analysis of two variables to determine relationships between them. Bivariate analyses are often reported in quality of life research. For an excellent example of research that utilizes bivariate analyses and demonstrates how the results of bivariate analyses can be used to inform further more complex analyses, please see Michalos, Thommasen, Read, Anderson, and Zumbo (2005).

Bivariate analysis is contrasted with univariate analysis (analysis of only one variable) and multivariate analysis (analysis of two or more variables simultaneously).


Bivariate analyses are conducted to determine whether a statistical association exists between two variables, the degree of association if one does exist, and whether one variable may be predicted from another. For example, bivariate analyses could be used to answer the question of whether there is an association between income and quality of life, or whether quality of life can be predicted...
