Abstract
The chapter focuses on the regional policies of the East-Central European countries in a historical perspective, with the most recent developments after the EU accession in more detail. The processes of regional development are presented and the policy responses discussed. It is being argued that the implicit regional outcomes of sectoral approaches have prevailed over the results of explicit regional policies, no matter the political or economic system in existence. The EU membership has brought important and positive changes to the regional development of the E-CE countries; however, recent institutional changes in the NMS may challenge the future benefits from membership.
In this chapter East-Central Europe is limited to the new member states of the EU. These are Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Croatia will be covered in a more limited extent.
