Knowledge Spillovers Informed by Network Theory and Social Network Analysis

Abstract

Researchers have applied network theory, and social network analysis methods to address questions developed within the field of knowledge spillovers. This research has the potential to illuminate the channels and mechanisms related to knowledge flows, especially as they relate to geography and the geographic concentration of innovation. This chapter has three objectives. First, to review prior findings within the field of knowledge spillovers, with a focus on existing findings that could be informed by network theory and social network analysis. Second, to review studies that have applied network theory and social network analysis methods to knowledge spillovers, and related fields. Finally, to suggest future research directions within the field of knowledge spillovers that can be informed by network theory and social network analysis methods.
