Braun-Falco´s Dermatology

Abstract

During pregnancy, complex endocrinological, immunological, metabolic, and vascular changes may lead to physiological skin changes and changes in the course of pre-existent dermatoses, as well as specific dermatoses of pregnancy. This term refers to a heterogeneous group of severely itchy inflammatory dermatoses associated only with pregnancy and/or the postpartum period. After decades of confusing nomenclature, a clinically relevant classification has been established that includes pemphigoid gestationis, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and atopic eruption of pregnancy. While some of these conditions are merely unpleasant for the mother owing to pruritus, others pose a potential risk to the child. Early diagnosis and therapy is therefore essential and facilitated by a diagnostic algorithm.

In addition, skin diseases can coincidentally coincide with a pregnancy. Both diagnosis and therapy should always be critically evaluated against the background of pregnancy in order to avoid a potential impairment of the fetus.
