Pavel Andreevich Zhilin (∗February 8, 1942, in Velikiy Ustyug, Vologda region, Soviet Union; †December 4, 2005, in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation) was a scientist in the field of rational mechanics, shell theory, and tensor calculus. His scientific interests covered various branches of mechanics and theoretical physics. In his research he strived to pave a way based on rational mechanics to areas which are traditionally not associated with mechanics, such as physics of microstructures and electrodynamics.
Family and Education
Pavel Andreevich Zhilin was born in Velikiy Ustyug (Vologda region, Soviet Union), where his family found themselves during the World War II. He spent his childhood in Volkhov and Podporozhie, where his father, Andrey Pavlovich Zhilin, has been employed as a chief engineer at the coordinated hydroelectric system of Svir river. Zoya Alexeevna Zhilina, the mother of P.A. Zhilin, was bringing up the sons and kept the house.
