Zusammenfassung
Stress und Angst haben im Zusammenhang mit Leistungsdruck im Leistungssport gravierende Einflüsse sowohl auf die Leistung als auch auf den Gesundheitszustand von Athleten. Im vorliegenden Kapitel liegt der Schwerpunkt auf Stress, dessen Entstehung, Folgen und der Stressbewältigung. Wird der Stress als Bedrohung erlebt, ist der Übergang zur Angst und den damit verbundenen leistungsbeeinträchtigenden Gedanken fließend (Hanin 2000). Sowohl Stressentstehung als auch -auswirkung hängen von verschiedenen situativen und personellen Faktoren ab. Die besondere Situation von Spitzensportlern ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass unterschiedliche Stressoren innerhalb und außerhalb des Sports auf die Sportler einwirken. Viele der mentalen Fertigkeitstrainings der Sportpsychologie zielen darauf ab, Wettkampfleistung durch Abbau und Kontrolle von Stress und Ängsten zu stabilisieren. Erst in jüngerer Zeit ist das Thema der psychischen Gesundheit von Spitzensportlern thematisiert worden. Wesentliche Stressfolgen sind beispielsweise Burnout und Depression. Zunehmend werden auch in der Sportpsychologie Programme entwickelt, mit denen eine langfristige Stressbewältigung erreicht werden kann.
