FormalPara Beschreibungα-Galaktosidase ist eine Glykosidase, die die Hydrolyse der Glykosidbindung von α-Galaktopyranosiden katalysiert. Substrate sind galaktosehaltige Oligo- (Oligosaccharide) und Polysaccharide und Glykosphingolipide. Als Ceramidhexosidase spaltet das Enzym Glykosphingolipide, wie z. B. Globotriaosylceramid. Ist das Enzym nicht ausreichend vorhanden, kommt es zu einer Anreicherung der Glykosphingolipide, die zum Tode der Zelle führt. Ein genetisch bedingter Mangel an α-Galaktosidase führt zu Morbus Fabry.
