Zusammenfassung
(Medien-)theorien der Plattform sind keine neutralen Intermediäre, sie tun etwas. Der vorliegende Text differenziert deshalb zwischen verschiedenen Praktiken des Theoretisierens von Plattformen. Dabei verfolgt er die These, dass die Theoretisierungen sowohl einen medienhistorischen Index haben als auch selbst medienhistorisch performativ sind. Dies wird in Praktiken der Begriffsarbeit sichtbar, und insbesondere auch in der Art und Weise, wie Plattformtheorien selbst Praktiken thematisieren.

Praktiken sind, in Anlehnung an Bourdieu (1979) verstanden, was sich in der Praxis als gemeinsames Tun stabilisiert. Praxis ist insofern der umfassendere Begriff, mit dem über Vergemeinschaftung, Materialisierung, Verkörperung oder allgemein Stabilisierung des Tuns nichts gesagt ist. Insofern haben Plattformen und deren Theorien ihre Praktiken und auch ihre Praxis – erstere sind in letzterer situiert.

Dass sich Latours Ansatz gerade in dieser Hinsicht – genauso wie der seines „symmetrischen Zwillings“ Luc Boltanski – von Bourdieu zu unterscheiden suchte, haben Potthast und Guggenheim gezeigt. Sie demonstrieren allerdings auch, dass sowohl Boltanskis wie auch Latours Abgrenzung auf dem Vorwurf basiert, dass Bourdieu seine Theoretisierungen noch nicht genug der Praxisbeobachtung untergeordnet habe, da dessen Begriff des sozialen Feldes letztlich doch strukturdeterministisch sei (Potthast und Guggenheim 2013).

In einer etwas anders gelagerten und ebenfalls erwähnenswerten Typologie unterscheiden die Managementforscher Panos Constantinides, Ola Henfridsson und Geoffrey Parker zwischen Digital Platforms und Product Platforms; für letztere nennen sie das Beispiel der Automobilindustrie, die bestimmte, weniger sichtbare Teile, wie Radkästen, Tanks oder Bodenplatten für verschiedene Modelle teils auch unterschiedlicher Marken herstellt, um auf diese gemeinsame Plattform ein spezifisches Modell aufzusetzen (Constantinides et al. 2018). Der Unterschied zu den digitalen Plattformen sei, dass letztere zum einen „on top of digital infrastructures“ aufsetzen, die sie selbst in der Regel nicht besitzen. Zum anderen ermöglichten, kontrollierten und regelten digitale Plattformen Interaktionen zwischen diversen „platform participants“ (Constantinides et al. 2018, S. 381).
