Photoallergy is an acquired immunological reactivity which does not occur after the first exposure of skin to certain chemicals (also after systemic administration) and subsequent exposure to light or UV radiation. It needs 1–2 weeks before a photoallergen-specific skin reactivity can be demonstrated after re-exposure and light or UV irradiation. It is a delayed hypersensitivity response manifested in the skin as eczema.
