A tumor suppressor gene that codes for a protein of approximately 53 K molecular weight that controls cell death and cell cycling; this gene is mutated in many human cancers allowing transformed cells to escape cell death. p53 is often activated in response to DNA damage produced by genotoxic agents leading to inhibition of the cell cycle and induction of apoptosis.
