General Information on the Netherlands

Introduction

The countries the Netherlands, Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten constitute the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Netherlands located in Western Europe is composed of 12 provinces. These provinces form the administrative layer between the national government and the local municipalities and have responsibility for matters of subnational or regional importance such as extraction of near surface raw materials. The highest point of the Netherlands is the 887 m high Mount Scenery (stratovolcano, the summit lava dome of Saba, GVP 2017). The Netherlands in Europe have a surface area of 4.2·104 m2 on land and 5.7·104 m2 at sea (the neighboring exclusive economic zone of the North Sea) and a population of 17.3·106 inhabitants.
