Abstract
Lesion or disease of the peripheral nerve is a unique phenomenon in biology because it separates a single cell into two. The term traditionally used for peripheral neuropathies is ‘compression syndromes’. Scarring of tissues surrounding the nerve might block its gliding in relation to the nerve bed, decrease its vascularization, evoke intrafascicular fibrotization, and finally destroy the nerve. In such a situation, mobilization of the nerve and its elongation is the cause of nerve injury and the term ‘injury from elongation’ might be used. Nerve compression syndromes are very common in sports such as biking (ulnar and median nerve entrapment at the wrist), triathlon (up to 33 %), and others. The treatment is mainly conservative, but operative treatment may be considered in well-selected cases.
