Abstract
Volleyball is considered one of the safest sports, almost free from serious injuries; however, 78 % of top-level players declare regular intake of pain killers and NSAIDs. Up to 68 % of athletes per year experience a severe ankle sprain, mainly while landing from a block or spike. Although most players are able to play with the ankle sprain, they can develop ankle instability which leads to an improper pattern of asymmetric landing with the stress on a stable joint. A few years of overuse of the opposite knee or ankle can cause ipsilateral knee meniscal or patellofemoral problems, in addition to recurrent ankle sprains. The best way to solve the problem is prophylactic proprioceptive training. Results of investigations among elite juniors show that 53 % of them already have unstable ankles and have “senior” contusions. The training program should be introduced at the level of cadets, but this is difficult because of cognitive problems from the side of young players and coaches.
