Definition

The term “lean production” was first introduced in “The machine that changed the world,” published in 1990 (Holweg 2007), to differentiate Toyota’s production practices from mass production in the automotive industry. Thus, lean production can be seen as a synonym to the Toyota Production System (TPS), which is elaborated in this entry. John Krafcik described TPS as a production which “uses less of everything compared with mass production – half the human effort in the factory, half the manufacturing space, half the investment in tools, half the engineering hours to develop a product in half the time. Also, it requires keeping far less than half the needed inventory on site, results in many fewer defects and produces a greater and ever growing variety of products” (Womack et al. 1990, p. ~11). However, lean production is more...
